Ophthalmology
Overview
Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine that involves prevention, diagnosis and treatment of all eye and vision-related conditions.
From routine eye check-ups for young children to treatment of age-related eye diseases in senior citizens, eye health services are an essential part of the medical facilities available for the general population.

Glaucoma is degenerative eye condition, in which the optic nerves of the eyes get damaged because of fluid build-up in the front part of the eyes, which in turn puts pressure on the eyes.
The risk of glaucoma increases with age and it is mostly seen in the 60+ age group. Glaucoma cannot be cured, and if untreated can cause loss of eyesight.
But, when detected early, glaucoma can be managed well with medications.
This is an eye disorder cause by uncontrolled or untreated diabetes.
In diabetic retinopathy, the blood vessels in the retina may get damaged or there may be abnormal blood vessels.
If not managed, it may eventually lead to loss of vision. Patients with diabetes must go for regular eye check-ups to rule out any complications.
