Oncology
Oncology is the branch of medicine dedicated to the research, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. It is a vast and specialised discipline that encompasses a variety of diagnostic techniques, treatment methodologies and diligent management of the disease. Oncologists are doctors specially trained in the treatment and care of cancer patients. Oncology cannot be an isolated branch of medicine, considering doctors have to treat the patient based on the part of the body or organ that has been affected by the disease, so oncologists have to take a multi-disciplinary approach to cancer treatment.
Based on the type, location and treatment of the cancer, it may be categorised into different sub-specialities, such as paediatric oncology (treating children), gynaecological oncology (treating cancer of the reproductive organs), renal oncology (treating cancer of the kidney and related organs) and haematological oncology (treating blood cancers) among others.
