Pneumonia
- It is an infection, wherein there is inflammation of the air sacs in the lungs causing fever, incessant cough and difficulty in breathing. Pneumonia may be caused by a bacteria or virus and can lead to severe complications and even be fatal, if left untreated. Children and older people are more susceptible to this infection compared to healthy adults.
Bronchitis
Asthma
- It is a respiratory condition characterised by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, making it difficult for a person to breathe. In some people, the symptoms may be mild and may not cause much problems, flaring up once in a while because of certain triggers. But in some patients asthma may be long-term, accompanied by severe symptoms such as shortness of breath, continuous wheezing and coughing, adversely affecting the quality of life.
Sleep Apnea
- This a respiratory condition that can be dangerous if left untreated. It is a sleep disorder wherein breathing is obstructed intermittently while a person is sleeping. Breathing may stop and start again and this condition is characterised by loud snoring. Sleep apnea is most often seen in people with hypertension and obesity and can be treated with certain breathing devices and by making changes in lifestyle such as eating healthy and taking up physical activity.
Tuberculosis
- This is a serious bacterial infection caused by the organism Mycobacterium tuberculosis that attacks the lungs and results in severe cough (with the patient sometimes throwing up blood), shortness of breath, fever, weight loss and tiredness. Often patients may not have symptoms. Tuberculosis is treatable and can be cured through a prolonged course of medications.
Cystic Fibrosis
- This is a life-threatening genetic disorder that affects the lungs, in which there is production of thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and digestive system.
