Respiratory Medicine

Overview

As we grapple with ever-growing pollution levels in urban areas coupled with attacks from new viruses, there seems to be an overwhelming rise in respiratory tract infections and conditions that affect the lung and chest. Respiratory medicine plays an important role in addressing these health issues with a focus on prevention, early detection and timely treatment to allow patients to breathe easy and lead a normal life. Pulmonology or respiratory medicine is concerned with diseases that involve the respiratory tract, chest and lungs in both children and adults. Pulmonologists are medical professionals attached to the branch of internal medicine, who evaluate and help patients with respiratory illnesses get relief from breathing difficulty, sleep issues and obstruction in the chest and lungs, through medications and therapy. At Hindu Mission Hospital (HMH) we understand the needs of the community and have been addressing specific respiratory health-related problems that typically affect the urban milieu.

Bronchitis

This is a common condition in which the pipe-like structures (bronchial tubes) that carry air to the lungs are inflamed resulting in respiratory issues. Some of the symptoms of this condition include breathlessness, wheezing, cough accompanied by mucus, discomfort in the chest region and sometimes, fever. Bronchitis is categorised as chronic or acute. Chronic bronchitis is often characterised as being triggered by certain allergens such as dust, smoke and pollen among others. This is called allergic bronchitis. Acute bronchitis is caused by a viral infection that causes difficulty in breathing. Bronchitis comes under the wider group of lung conditions called Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (COPD).
