It is an infection, wherein there is inflammation of the air sacs in the lungs causing fever, incessant cough and difficulty in breathing.

Pneumonia may be caused by a bacteria or virus and can lead to severe complications and even be fatal, if left untreated.

Children and older people are more susceptible to this infection compared to healthy adults.

This is a common condition in which the pipe-like structures (bronchial tubes) that carry air to the lungs are inflamed resulting in respiratory issues.

Some of the symptoms of this condition include breathlessness, wheezing, cough accompanied by mucus, discomfort in the chest region and sometimes, fever.

Bronchitis is categorised as chronic or acute.

Chronic bronchitis is often characterised as being triggered by certain allergens such as dust, smoke and pollen among others.

This is called allergic bronchitis.

Acute bronchitis is caused by a viral infection that causes difficulty in breathing.

Bronchitis comes under the wider group of lung conditions called Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (COPD).

It is a respiratory condition characterised by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, making it difficult for a person to breathe.

In some people, the symptoms may be mild and may not cause much problems, flaring up once in a while because of certain triggers.

But in some patients asthma may be long-term, accompanied by severe symptoms such as shortness of breath, continuous wheezing and coughing, adversely affecting the quality of life.

This is a serious bacterial infection caused by the organism Mycobacterium tuberculosis that attacks the lungs and results in severe cough (with the patient sometimes throwing up blood), shortness of breath, fever, weight loss and tiredness.

Often patients may not have symptoms. Tuberculosis is treatable and can be cured through a prolonged course of medications.

This a respiratory condition that can be dangerous if left untreated.

It is a sleep disorder wherein breathing is obstructed intermittently while a person is sleeping.

Breathing may stop and start again and this condition is characterised by loud snoring.

Sleep apnea is most often seen in people with hypertension and obesity and can be treated with certain breathing devices and by making changes in lifestyle such as eating healthy and taking up physical activity.

This is a life-threatening genetic disorder that affects the lungs, in which there is production of thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and digestive system.

About
Pulmonology

As we grapple with ever-growing pollution levels in urban areas coupled with attacks from new viruses, there seems to be an overwhelming rise in respiratory tract infections and conditions that affect the lung and chest.

Respiratory medicine plays an important role in addressing these health issues with a focus on prevention, early detection and timely treatment to allow patients to breathe easy and lead a normal life.

Pulmonology or respiratory medicine is concerned with diseases that involve the respiratory tract, chest and lungs in both children and adults.

Pulmonologists are medical professionals attached to the branch of internal medicine, who evaluate and help patients with respiratory illnesses get relief from breathing difficulty, sleep issues and obstruction in the chest and lungs, through medications and therapy.

At Hindu Mission Hospital (HMH) we understand the needs of the community and have been addressing specific respiratory health-related problems that typically affect the urban milieu.
